SUMMARY:Canopy Time -- October
DESCRIPTION:If you pay attention\, you can tell time by the forest canopy—twigs and seeds\, branches and leaves marking seasons with color\, fullness\, sway.  – Abby Braithwaite\, A Portrait of the Artist as a Crone Tree. Canopy Time walks are mostly monthly walks/rolls/rides on Plas Newydd Farm. Hosted by Abby Braithwaite and David Morgan (and some surprise guests)\, these adventures give us the chance to explore some of the most beautiful places on the farm\, and provide a deeper opportunity to feel the rhythms of the land\, observe the comings and goings of migratory birds\, watch the bud and bloom of native and invasive plants\, swat mosquitoes\, and dodge raindrops!  \nPart nature journaling\, part phenological record-keeping\, these explorations are a great way to spend more time out on the land than some of our workshops allow.  \nBring your journal\, your sketchbook\, your camera and your senses.  \nSuggested Donation of $10 collected on the farm. We\’ll take cash\, check\, Venmo or a smile\, if cost is a barrier! \n[metaslider id=4496]

SUMMARY:Nature Journaling with Betsy Jager
DESCRIPTION:“Those who dwell among the beauties and systems of the earth are never alone or weary of life.” – Rachel Carson\n\nWe’re so excited to welcome Ridgefield artist\, wildlife photographer\, teacher and observer extraordinaire to the farm!  \nSpend the day on Plas Newydd Farm\, connecting with nature.  Nature journaling is the process of being present in a space\, looking carefully at the world around us\, documenting and expressing what we see and wonder. Whether you are a new or veteran nature journaler\, come with an open mind\, love of nature\, and permission to question and create. You do not have to be an artist to benifit from nature journalling. We often see beautiful pages of botanical drawings on Pinterest and other social media and feel intimidated. The benefits and essence of nature journalling lie in the process and time spent slowing down to look carefully and build a connection to the world we live in. \nWe will spend time building your  skills from wherever you are in your artistic process\, filling your tool box so you can feeling more confident in expressing your ideas the way you see them. The day will be a balance of building skills to better capture what we see\, and active exploration and observation out in the field. We will work on drawing techniques used for observation\, layout/design\, color\, and use of watercolors.  \nWe believe strongly that nature journaling is one of the most intimate and accessible ways to be in a landscape. You don’t need to be an “Artist” to join us — just come with a willingness to learn\, a desire to observe the world around you and an interest to wonder!  \nPlease bring a lunch and refillable water bottle and anything you need to be comfortable outdoors in early September. Coffee\, tea\, and light snacks will be provided.  \nWe plan to be out on the farm as much as possible for this workshop\, so come prepared for the weather! If you have mobility or other accessibility issues\, please reach out to Abby at arts@pnfarm.com to discuss how we may be able to support you for this field-based event. Additionally\, please feel free to reach out to Abby if you need to access a full or partial scholarship from the Spirit Lake Scholarship Fund in order to attend the class and/or purchase supplies.  \n \nA note on materials: There are two ticket types for this class\, depending whether you need materials or you will provide your own. Please read the following\, and choose the ticket that best reflects your needs.  \n1) Workshop cost + materials includes the workshop cost and all materials needed. They will be ready for you when you arrive and you take them home with you to continue your nature journalling. \n2) Workshop cost only (no materials provided) is just the workshop\, and assumes that you have or will get your own materials.  \nWe do have limited loaner supplies on hand\, so if you need just one or two things from the list\, or you aren’t sure about making an investment just for this class\, please email Abby to discuss and she will guide you to the best ticket option for you.   \n \nMaterials List:\n\nMixed Media Sketchbook with thick pages\, that will accept pen and watercolor\n\nSuggestion: Canson Mixed Media 9×12\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuality Watercolor Set with an assortment of colors\n\nSuggestion: Winsor & Newton Cotman Field Set 14 colors\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatercolor Brush The brush (size 4) that comes  in your travel set is a nice universal size. If you want to expand your collection It is nice to have a larger brush (size 6 or 8) for washes and large areas and smaller brush (size 2 or 3) for smaller details. Single brushes can be purchased at Blick Art supplies online or in person.  Amazon has the set below that has an assortment.\n\nSuggestion: Winsor & Newton Cotman 4-Brush Set\n\n\n\n\n\nMicron Pen 01 or 02 (waterproof ink pen). These can easily be purchased as a single at Blick Art Supplies\, Craft Warehouse\, etc.\n\nSuggestion: Amazon pack of 3\n\n\n\n\nMechanical Pencil\n\n\nSmall lidded jar for water This could be a jelly jar\, plastic water bottle and leak proof water container.  \n\n\nSmall rag or towel for dabbing your brush \n\n\nOptional\n\nRuler\nNon Photo Blue Pencil\n\n\n \n\nBetsy has always found art and nature to be powerful and driving forces in her life.  She was a native to the Pacific Northwest\, before traveling to Los Angeles\, CA for school where she attended both Otis Parsons School Art and Design and Whittier College. It was in school that she decided to combine her passion for art with the need to share that through education. She majored in both printmaking and child development\, continuing on to recieve her Masters in Education with an emphasis on art education. She continued on to teach graduate courses in art education and worked at the LA County Museum of Art before returning home to the beautiful PNW.  \nWhen she returned\, she continued teaching and running her own art studio\, bringing art to both children and adults. Drawing and painting have always been a huge part of her life and how she documents and shares the natural world around her. While raising her family\, photography began to take on a greater and greater role in how she captures the world around her\, especially nature.  Now she is an avid wildlife photographer that loves to immerse herself in nature and bring its beauty to others.  \nMany years ago\, she was introduced to the fabulous work of John Muir Laws\, the guru and driving force of nature journalling. She was instantly drawn in\, seeing an intersection of all the things she loves.  Personally\, she loved the stillness and connection to nature it provided—a perfect platform for closer\, more thoughtful observation and questioning.  Even more importantly\, she was drawn to the important role nature journalling can play in helping people connect with the preciousness and fragility of our rapidly changing world. She believes the most powerful way to inspire people to care for our earth is the help them build meaningful connections with nature\, whether you bring nature’s story to people through photography\, or bring people to nature to connect with its smallest pieces through nature journalling.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Exploring Transitions -- A multi-disciplinary workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Vancouver artist Sharon Svec as we engage with the land and the changing seasons to explore the theme of transitions from many angles.  \nThrough a multidisciplinary arts approach\, workshop attendees will discuss transition\, reflect on transition\, plan an output based on their discussion/reflection\, and execute the output. Participants will have the option to have a recorded live performance at the end of the session. This workshop will serve to support personal\, as well as ecological transition\, with a focus on seasons\, cycles and natural patterns. Participants whose art-form requires specific tools/instruments will need to provide their own for this workshop. Please feel welcome to contact Sharon at sharon@smsvec.com for questions. \nPlease note: This will be an all-day outdoor workshop\, so please come prepared to be in the weather. We will provide light snacks\, water\, tea and coffee throughout the day\, and will have a shade canopy and camp chairs as needed. Participants should pack a lunch\, water bottle\, extra snacks\,  a notebook and writing/drawing tool\, and articles of interest with consideration to transition (whatever has meaning to you and makes you think creatively). \nPlease get in touch via email to arts@pnfarm.com if you have any accessibility needs that we need to be aware of\, or if you would like to access a full or partial scholarship through the Spirit Lake Scholarship Fund. We would love to work with you to make all PN Farm Arts Initiative workshops as accessible as we can\, so don\’t be shy about getting in touch! \nAbout your instructor:  \n \nSharon is an artist with experience in design\, textiles\, communication\, theater and dance. Born and raised in the wilds of Southern Illinois\, she has a great affinity to the natural world. Sharon earned degrees in Visual Communication and Professional Media Practice from Southern Illinois University while side-hustling as a thespian\, receptionist and cartographer. Some of her most favorite creative experiences include the direction of “Onryo of Refuse\,” a butoh inspired performance in 2010\, and having been invited to exhibit her tapestries at the European Roma Institute of Arts in Culture in Berlin (2023). She currently works in the fields of art and design.

SUMMARY:Poetics of Change with Christopher Luna
DESCRIPTION:In this one-day generative and experiential poetry workshop\, participants will delve into the Poetics of Change. The group will have the opportunity to visit three locations on Plas Newydd Farm that will be essential to the future habitat and wetland restoration work planned for the farm. At each location we\’ll learn a little about the past\, present and potential futures of the site\, and write to prompts inspired by each place. \nAfter our farm journey guided by PN Farm\’s Abby Brathwaite and David Morgan\, we will return to the house to share some of what you have written in a safe\, supportive environment.   \nNo experience writing poetry is necessary! Christopher and Abby will provide all the guidance needed to access this workshop! \nPlease bring comfortable clothes and shoes for the weather\, a journal and pen\, a sack lunch and a water bottle.  \nScholarships are available if cost is a barrier! Please email arts@pnfarm.com to inquire. We received a generous gift to seed our scholarship fund\, and don\’t want to turn anyone away if we can help it! \n***Please note*** While we will be driving to the locations around the farm\, there will be an opportunity to walk a short distance at each location. Terrain is uneven. Please let us know at arts@pnfarm.com if you need mobility assistance\, and we will find a way to support you! \n \nChristopher Luna is a poet\, editor\, teacher\, writing coach\, and artist who served as the Inaugural Poet Laureate of Clark County\, WA from 2013-2017. Luna has an MFA from the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics. He is the co-founder\, with Toni Lumbrazo Luna\, of Printed Matter Vancouver\, an editing service and small press for Northwest writers. He and Morgan Paige co-host the LGBTQ+ friendly\, all ages and uncensored Ghost Town Poetry Open Mic in Vancouver\, WA\, founded by Christopher in 2004.
