SUMMARY:One-Backpack Plein Air – Pack Light and Paint Bold!
DESCRIPTION:We\’re so delighted to welcome Portland-based painter and teacher Scott Gellatly back to the farm for another two-day dive into plein air painting! This workshop is likely to fill up\, so register early to guaranty your spot! \nThis two-day workshop will explore the fundamentals of plein air painting\, with a focus on strategic color concepts while capturing the light\, atmosphere\, and emotion of the landscape in a bold\, responsive manner. Participants will paint throughout the diverse Plas Newydd property while considering the formal aspects of painting – color\, composition\, movement\, and space. Scott will lead participants in plein air sessions\, as well as color lectures and demonstrations. \nWe plan to be out on the farm as much as possible for this workshop\, so come prepared for the weather! If you have mobility or other accessibility  issues\, please reach out to Abby at arts@pnfarm.com to discuss how we may be able to support you for this field-based event. Additionally\, please feel free to reach out to Abby  if you need to access a full or partial scholarship from the Spirit Lake Scholarship Fund in order to attend the class and/or purchase supplies. \nThere is no materials fee for this workshop\, but there is an extensive collection of supplies you will need to bring in order to participate. If you have questions about items on the list posted below\, please reach out directly to Scott via email. \nScott Gellatly is a Portland-based artist and instructor whose work straddles the line between representation and abstraction. His work has been exhibited nationally and was featured in the February/March 2023 issue of Plein Air Magazine. Scott is represented by LAURA VINCENT DESIGN & GALLERY in Portland. \nMATERIALS LIST \nThis workshop will be focusing on plein air painting in oil or acrylic. \nColor Palette: \n\nTitanium White\nCadmium Yellow Light\nIndian Yellow (Gamblin oils)\, Indian Yellow Hue (Golden acrylics)\nCadmium Orange\nQuinacridone Red (Gamblin oils)\, Primary Magenta (Golden acrylics)\nUltramarine Blue\nCobalt Teal or Turquoise (Gamblin oils or Golden Acrylic)\n\nPainting Panels: \nAmpersand Gessobord panels are my favorite\, and they work well for both oils and acrylics. Their flat\, 1/8” panels are sturdy and easy to travel with. You can easily make your own by cutting hardwood/plywood panels and apply 2 – 3 coats of quality acrylic gesso to the surface. \n7 – 8 @ panels\, sizes 6” x 8” or 8” x 10”. \nWet-panel Carrier: \nThese are more important for oil painters\, as the slower drying rate of oils means you will need to safely transport your finished pieces. I recommend RAYMAR wet panel carriers\, as they are lightweight. Refer to their chart on their website listing the various sized panels their carriers will accommodate. \nOil/Acrylic Painting Brushes: \nFlat sizes 6 & 10. Recommended brand: Princeton Aspen (or similar) \nOther Materials: \n\nPainting medium for oil painting: Gamblin Solvent-Free Gel\nSpray bottle or retarder medium if working in acrylics\nMetal Palette knife\, “teardrop shape” such as RGM S.026. SUMMARY:Color in Plein Air
DESCRIPTION:*** This workshop is sold out. Email arts@pnfarm.com to be added to the waiting list. *** \nThis two-day workshop will explore the fundamentals of plein air painting\, with a focus on strategic color concepts to capture the light\, atmosphere and emotion of the landscape. Participants will paint throughout the diverse Plas Newydd Farm property while considering the formal aspects of painting – color\, composition\, movement\, and space. Scott will lead participants in plein air sessions\, as well as color lectures and exercises. \nPlease note this is a two-day workshop\, running from 8am-6pm both days. Please contact Abby at arts@pnfarm.com if you would like to be steered to nearby accommodations.  \nStudents should bring plein air gear\, water\, and a sack lunch. We will provide light snacks throughout the day.  \nScott Gellatly is a Portland-based artist and instructor whose work straddles the line between representation and abstraction. His work has been exhibited nationally and was most-recently featured in the February/March issue of Plein Air Magazine. \nwww.scottgellatly.com \n \nMATERIALS LIST\nThis workshop will be focusing on plein air painting in oil or acrylic. \nColor Palette:\n\nTitanium White (150ml or 3 @ 37ml)\nCadmium Yellow Light\nIndian Yellow (Gamblin oils)\, Indian Yellow Hue (Golden acrylics)\nCadmium Orange\nQuinacridone Red (Gamblin oils)\, Primary Magenta (Golden acrylics)\nUltramarine Blue\nCobalt Teal or Turquoise (Gamblin oils or Golden Acrylic)\n\nPainting Panels:\nAmpersand Gessobord panels are my favorite\, and they work well for both oils and acrylics. Their flat\, 1/8” panels are sturdy and easy to travel with. You can easily make your own by cutting hardwood/plywood panels and apply 2 – 3 coats of quality acrylic gesso to the surface. \n1 @ 12” x 16 Panel taped out into a 2 x 2 grid with masking tape. \n3 – 4 @ larger panels in sizes between 9” x 12” to 12” x 16”. \nWet-panel Carrier:\nThese are more important for oil painters\, as the slower drying rate of oils means you will need to safely transport your finished pieces. I recommend RAYMAR wet panel carriers\, as they are lightweight. Refer to their chart on their website listing the various sized panels their carriers will accommodate. For example\, their 10” x 12” carrier will accommodate panels that share the 12” dimension (including 9” x 12”\, and 6” x 12”). \nIn lieu of a pre-made wet panel carrier\, a couple clean pizza boxes will work just fine. \nEasel:\nThe main consideration with a plein air easel is that it is lightweight\, but large enough to support the size of paintings we’ll be doing in class. \nI recommend the UGO Pochade Boxes. They come in three different sizes – the middle and largest sizes will work well for the size of panels listed above. \nUnless your outdoor easel is equipped with legs\, you will need a tripod. I’ve used the MeFOTO Backpacker for years\, as its sturdy and lightweight. \nPalette:\nIf the palette is not already part of your plein air easel\, consider using a class palette approximately 9” x 12”. Hardware store glass\, backed with foam core with duct tape around the perimeter is a cost-effective option. \nOil/Acrylic Painting Brushes:\nFilbert or Flat\, three different sizes. Recommended brand: Princeton Aspen \nOther Materials:\n\nPainting medium for oil painting: Gamblin Solvent-Free Gel\nMetal Palette knife\, “teardrop shape” such as RGM S.026\nBackpack to carry plein air gear\nCamping stool if you prefer to sit.\nSunscreen\nWide-brimmed hat\nBug spray\n\nAdditional Information\nPlease feel free to reach out anytime with any questions you may have regarding the supply list. I have a limited number of materials available to borrow if there is a financial barrier to acquiring what is needed for the class. My email address is scottgellatly@hotmail.com.
