SUMMARY:Soup and Words – Drop-in Writing Time!
DESCRIPTION:It\’s time to sit and write together!  \nThere is little I love more than sitting in a warm room with brilliant minds\, putting words on the page and sharing snippets of what we create. So I\’m making the space for this in my life this year\, and I\’d love to have you join me!  \nThere will be soup. There will be writing prompts. There will be time to share\, with (gentle\, loving) feedback if you want it. And there will be time to sit quietly and get some writing done. (And everyone knows reading is integral to the writing process\, so if what you need is a few hours carved out of each month with a good book and a cup of tea\, no one will be counting words produced!)  \nParticipation will be capped at 12 people\, so please RSVP to this free event so that we can keep the group size intimate and safe for sharing!

SUMMARY:One-Backpack Plein Air – Pack Light and Paint Bold!
DESCRIPTION:We\’re so delighted to welcome Portland-based painter and teacher Scott Gellatly back to the farm for another two-day dive into plein air painting! This workshop is likely to fill up\, so register early to guaranty your spot! \nThis two-day workshop will explore the fundamentals of plein air painting\, with a focus on strategic color concepts while capturing the light\, atmosphere\, and emotion of the landscape in a bold\, responsive manner. Participants will paint throughout the diverse Plas Newydd property while considering the formal aspects of painting – color\, composition\, movement\, and space. Scott will lead participants in plein air sessions\, as well as color lectures and demonstrations. \nWe plan to be out on the farm as much as possible for this workshop\, so come prepared for the weather! If you have mobility or other accessibility  issues\, please reach out to Abby at arts@pnfarm.com to discuss how we may be able to support you for this field-based event. Additionally\, please feel free to reach out to Abby  if you need to access a full or partial scholarship from the Spirit Lake Scholarship Fund in order to attend the class and/or purchase supplies. \nThere is no materials fee for this workshop\, but there is an extensive collection of supplies you will need to bring in order to participate. If you have questions about items on the list posted below\, please reach out directly to Scott via email. \nScott Gellatly is a Portland-based artist and instructor whose work straddles the line between representation and abstraction. His work has been exhibited nationally and was featured in the February/March 2023 issue of Plein Air Magazine. Scott is represented by LAURA VINCENT DESIGN & GALLERY in Portland. \nMATERIALS LIST \nThis workshop will be focusing on plein air painting in oil or acrylic. \nColor Palette: \n\nTitanium White\nCadmium Yellow Light\nIndian Yellow (Gamblin oils)\, Indian Yellow Hue (Golden acrylics)\nCadmium Orange\nQuinacridone Red (Gamblin oils)\, Primary Magenta (Golden acrylics)\nUltramarine Blue\nCobalt Teal or Turquoise (Gamblin oils or Golden Acrylic)\n\nPainting Panels: \nAmpersand Gessobord panels are my favorite\, and they work well for both oils and acrylics. Their flat\, 1/8” panels are sturdy and easy to travel with. You can easily make your own by cutting hardwood/plywood panels and apply 2 – 3 coats of quality acrylic gesso to the surface. \n7 – 8 @ panels\, sizes 6” x 8” or 8” x 10”. \nWet-panel Carrier: \nThese are more important for oil painters\, as the slower drying rate of oils means you will need to safely transport your finished pieces. I recommend RAYMAR wet panel carriers\, as they are lightweight. Refer to their chart on their website listing the various sized panels their carriers will accommodate. \nOil/Acrylic Painting Brushes: \nFlat sizes 6 & 10. Recommended brand: Princeton Aspen (or similar) \nOther Materials: \n\nPainting medium for oil painting: Gamblin Solvent-Free Gel\nSpray bottle or retarder medium if working in acrylics\nMetal Palette knife\, “teardrop shape” such as RGM S.026. No plastic palette knives.\nBackpack to carry plein air gear\nCamping stool if you prefer to sit.\nRags/paper towels\nBug spray\n\nAdditional Information \nPlease feel free to reach out anytime with any questions you may have regarding the supply list.

SUMMARY:Canopy Time -- September
DESCRIPTION:New Date for September! \nIf you pay attention\, you can tell time by the forest canopy—twigs and seeds\, branches and leaves marking seasons with color\, fullness\, sway.  – Abby Braithwaite\, A Portrait of the Artist as a Crone Tree. Canopy Time walks are mostly monthly walks/rolls/rides on Plas Newydd Farm. SUMMARY:Nature Journaling with Betsy Jager
DESCRIPTION:“Those who dwell among the beauties and systems of the earth are never alone or weary of life.” – Rachel Carson\n\nWe’re so excited to welcome Ridgefield artist\, wildlife photographer\, teacher and observer extraordinaire to the farm!  \nSpend the day on Plas Newydd Farm\, connecting with nature.  Nature journaling is the process of being present in a space\, looking carefully at the world around us\, documenting and expressing what we see and wonder. Whether you are a new or veteran nature journaler\, come with an open mind\, love of nature\, and permission to question and create. You do not have to be an artist to benifit from nature journalling. We often see beautiful pages of botanical drawings on Pinterest and other social media and feel intimidated. The benefits and essence of nature journalling lie in the process and time spent slowing down to look carefully and build a connection to the world we live in. \nWe will spend time building your  skills from wherever you are in your artistic process\, filling your tool box so you can feeling more confident in expressing your ideas the way you see them. The day will be a balance of building skills to better capture what we see\, and active exploration and observation out in the field. We will work on drawing techniques used for observation\, layout/design\, color\, and use of watercolors.  \nWe believe strongly that nature journaling is one of the most intimate and accessible ways to be in a landscape. You don’t need to be an “Artist” to join us — just come with a willingness to learn\, a desire to observe the world around you and an interest to wonder!  \nPlease bring a lunch and refillable water bottle and anything you need to be comfortable outdoors in early September. Coffee\, tea\, and light snacks will be provided. \n \nA note on materials: There are two ticket types for this class\, depending whether you need materials or you will provide your own. Please read the following\, and choose the ticket that best reflects your needs.  \n1) Workshop cost + materials includes the workshop cost and all materials needed. They will be ready for you when you arrive and you take them home with you to continue your nature journalling. \n2) Workshop cost only (no materials provided) is just the workshop\, and assumes that you have or will get your own materials.  \nWe do have limited loaner supplies on hand\, so if you need just one or two things from the list\, or you aren’t sure about making an investment just for this class\, please email Abby to discuss and she will guide you to the best ticket option for you.   \n \nMaterials List:\n\nMixed Media Sketchbook with thick pages\, that will accept pen and watercolor\n\nSuggestion: Canson Mixed Media 9×12\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuality Watercolor Set with an assortment of colors\n\nSuggestion: Winsor & Newton Cotman Field Set 14 colors\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatercolor Brush The brush (size 4) that comes  in your travel set is a nice universal size. If you want to expand your collection It is nice to have a larger brush (size 6 or 8) for washes and large areas and smaller brush (size 2 or 3) for smaller details. Single brushes can be purchased at Blick Art supplies online or in person.  Amazon has the set below that has an assortment.\n\nSuggestion: Winsor & Newton Cotman 4-Brush Set\n\n\n\n\n\nMicron Pen 01 or 02 (waterproof ink pen). These can easily be purchased as a single at Blick Art Supplies\, Craft Warehouse\, etc.\n\nSuggestion: Amazon pack of 3\n\n\n\n\nMechanical Pencil\n\n\nSmall lidded jar for water This could be a jelly jar\, plastic water bottle and leak proof water container.  \n\n\nSmall rag or towel for dabbing your brush \n\n\nOptional\n\nRuler\nNon Photo Blue Pencil\n\n\n \n\nBetsy has always found art and nature to be powerful and driving forces in her life.  She was a native to the Pacific Northwest\, before traveling to Los Angeles\, CA for school where she attended both Otis Parsons School Art and Design and Whittier College. It was in school that she decided to combine her passion for art with the need to share that through education. She majored in both printmaking and child development\, continuing on to recieve her Masters in Education with an emphasis on art education. She continued on to teach graduate courses in art education and worked at the LA County Museum of Art before returning home to the beautiful PNW.  \nWhen she returned\, she continued teaching and running her own art studio\, bringing art to both children and adults. Drawing and painting have always been a huge part of her life and how she documents and shares the natural world around her. While raising her family\, photography began to take on a greater and greater role in how she captures the world around her\, especially nature.  Now she is an avid wildlife photographer that loves to immerse herself in nature and bring its beauty to others.  \nMany years ago\, she was introduced to the fabulous work of John Muir Laws\, the guru and driving force of nature journalling. She was instantly drawn in\, seeing an intersection of all the things she loves.  Personally\, she loved the stillness and connection to nature it provided—a perfect platform for closer\, more thoughtful observation and questioning.  Even more importantly\, she was drawn to the important role nature journalling can play in helping people connect with the preciousness and fragility of our rapidly changing world. She believes the most powerful way to inspire people to care for our earth is the help them build meaningful connections with nature\, whether you bring nature’s story to people through photography\, or bring people to nature to connect with its smallest pieces through nature journalling.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Exploring Transitions -- A multi-disciplinary workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Vancouver artist Sharon Svec as we engage with the land and the changing seasons to explore the theme of transitions from many angles.  \nThrough a multidisciplinary arts approach\, workshop attendees will discuss transition\, reflect on transition\, plan an output based on their discussion/reflection\, and execute the output. Participants will have the option to have a recorded live performance at the end of the session. This workshop will serve to support personal\, as well as ecological transition\, with a focus on seasons\, cycles and natural patterns. Participants whose art-form requires specific tools/instruments will need to provide their own for this workshop. Please feel welcome to contact Sharon at sharon@smsvec.com for questions. \nPlease note: This will be an all-day outdoor workshop\, so please come prepared to be in the weather. We will provide light snacks\, water\, tea and coffee throughout the day\, and will have a shade canopy and camp chairs as needed. Participants should pack a lunch\, water bottle\, extra snacks\,  a notebook and writing/drawing tool\, and articles of interest with consideration to transition (whatever has meaning to you and makes you think creatively). \nPlease get in touch via email to arts@pnfarm.com if you have any accessibility needs that we need to be aware of\, or if you would like to access a full or partial scholarship through the Spirit Lake Scholarship Fund. We would love to work with you to make all PN Farm Arts Initiative workshops as accessible as we can\, so don\’t be shy about getting in touch! \nAbout your instructor:  \n \nSharon is an artist with experience in design\, textiles\, communication\, theater and dance. Born and raised in the wilds of Southern Illinois\, she has a great affinity to the natural world. Sharon earned degrees in Visual Communication and Professional Media Practice from Southern Illinois University while side-hustling as a thespian\, receptionist and cartographer. Some of her most favorite creative experiences include the direction of “Onryo of Refuse\,” a butoh inspired performance in 2010\, and having been invited to exhibit her tapestries at the European Roma Institute of Arts in Culture in Berlin (2023). She currently works in the fields of art and design.

SUMMARY:Inspired By Place: Open Air Monotypes on the Farm
DESCRIPTION:NEW TIME and PRICE! — Now just 2 days! \nWith Nanette Wallace and Lisa Ellis. \nIn this two-day workshop we will create monotypes outdoors\, inspired by our surroundings at the beautiful Plas Newydd farm. This large family farm located alongside the Lewis River has a diverse landscape\, with rolling fields\, mature forests\, old barns\, wild flowers and plenty of watery goodness to draw inspiration from\, and a lovely farmhouse for us to take refuge in. Inspiration can take many forms when working in and around nature\, and any direction that inspires you will be supported in this workshop\, representational or non-representation. We will create one of a kind prints on paper\, monotypes\, with an emphasis on light\, value\, impulse\, experimentation and joy! \n \n\n\nWe will apply and remove ink onto printing surfaces\, (aka plates) with brayers\, cotton cloths\, brushes\, and other tools to make original singular images printed on paper. This workshop will include a combination of instruction\, demonstration and individual work time. A range of additive and reductive monotype techniques will be covered. The workshop is open to all levels\, 18+; no prior experience is necessary. \n\n\nWorkshop materials will be included with the exception of paper. Each participant will begin with some paper to experiment with\, and additional paper will be sold on a per-sheet basis. Each sheet is large enough to print 2 to 12 monotypes\, depending upon the size of your plate. Sheets of high quality printmaking paper cost up to $7.50 each\, plan to budget $15 (or more) for additional paper. We will provide an optional material list prior to the workshop; recommended papers will be listed on the materials list if you prefer to bring your own. \nThe workshop will run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm each day (Saturday & Sunday). \nLight snacks\, coffee\, tea and water will be available free of charge. Participants should plan to bring lunch for each day\, comfortable shoes for walking and standing\, and layers of clothing for working outside in the fickle spring weather.   \nA $50 materials fee is included in the cost of the ticket for basic materials. See above for more detail on additional materials. \nScholarships are available if cost is a barrier! Please email arts@pnfarm.com to inquire. We received a generous gift to seed our scholarship fund\, and don\’t want to turn anyone away if we can help it!\n*** Please note — Ridgefield is about 45 minutes from most parts of Portland\, and an easy\, pleasant drive against most of the traffic of morning and evening commutes. If you\’d like to stay in the area for the weekend\, please reach out to Abby at abbyb@pnfarm.com for advice about local accommodations.  \n

SUMMARY:Canopy Time -- May
DESCRIPTION:If you pay attention\, you can tell time by the forest canopy—twigs and seeds\, branches and leaves marking seasons with color\, fullness\, sway.  – Abby Braithwaite\, A Portrait of the Artist as a Crone Tree. Canopy Time walks are mostly monthly walks/rolls/rides on Plas Newydd Farm. Hosted by Abby Braithwaite and David Morgan (and some surprise guests)\, these adventures give us the chance to explore some of the most beautiful places on the farm\, and provide a deeper opportunity to feel the rhythms of the land\, observe the comings and goings of migratory birds\, watch the bud and bloom of native and invasive plants\, swat mosquitoes\, and dodge raindrops!  \nPart nature journaling\, part phenological record-keeping\, these explorations are a great way to spend more time out on the land than some of our workshops allow.  \nBring your journal\, your sketchbook\, your camera and your senses.  \nSuggested Donation of $10 collected on the farm. SUMMARY:Poetics of Change with Christopher Luna
DESCRIPTION:In this one-day generative and experiential poetry workshop\, participants will delve into the Poetics of Change. The group will have the opportunity to visit three locations on Plas Newydd Farm that will be essential to the future habitat and wetland restoration work planned for the farm. At each location we\’ll learn a little about the past\, present and potential futures of the site\, and write to prompts inspired by each place. \nAfter our farm journey guided by PN Farm\’s Abby Brathwaite and David Morgan\, we will return to the house to share some of what you have written in a safe\, supportive environment.   \nNo experience writing poetry is necessary! Christopher and Abby will provide all the guidance needed to access this workshop! \nPlease bring comfortable clothes and shoes for the weather\, a journal and pen\, a sack lunch and a water bottle.  \nScholarships are available if cost is a barrier! Please email arts@pnfarm.com to inquire. We received a generous gift to seed our scholarship fund\, and don\’t want to turn anyone away if we can help it! \n***Please note*** While we will be driving to the locations around the farm\, there will be an opportunity to walk a short distance at each location. Terrain is uneven. Please let us know at arts@pnfarm.com if you need mobility assistance\, and we will find a way to support you! \n \nChristopher Luna is a poet\, editor\, teacher\, writing coach\, and artist who served as the Inaugural Poet Laureate of Clark County\, WA from 2013-2017. Luna has an MFA from the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics. SUMMARY:Random Weave Baskets with Julie Johnson
DESCRIPTION:New date!! \nIt\’s basket weaving time! \nIn this class we’ll explore the basics of random weave by creating a melon-sized basket. Working with willows and red osier dogwood harvested from Plas Newydd Farm earlier in the year\, we’ll create baskets that are a true collaboration with the farm’s gorgeous wetland landscapes. All skill levels are welcome! \nPlease bring a lunch\, clothes and shoes to be outside if weather allows a lunch time walk\, and your favorite pruning or kitchen shears. \nJulie Johnson has been weaving baskets for over 25 years and works primarily with plant materials that she and her husband gather during their explorations of Pacific Northwest landscapes. While also practicing many more traditional forms of weaving\, sculptural random weave baskets have become some of the most artistically-freeing forms of woven expression for her. \nFor more of Julie’s work see: \nColumbia Basin Basketry Guild: https://www.basketryguild.org/julie-johnson\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/florafiberdye/

SUMMARY:Farm Arts Open House\, Take Two
DESCRIPTION:Come spend a day on the farm celebrating the arts\, and some of Ridgefield and Clark County\’s most creative souls. All ages are welcome! \nThere will be mini-workshops\, tasty food\, an art showcase\, and maybe even a farm tour. It\’s not to be missed! Come learn about what\’s in store for our second year\, and learn how you can be a part of things! We hope to see you!  \n(The thing about beginnings is that it\’s hard to say exactly when a thing gets started! December was the anniversary of the first paid arts workshop on Plas Newydd Farm. January is the anniversary of our giant planning meeting back in 2020\, before the world shifted under our feet pandemic-style. But March? March of 2023 saw the first two workshops under the official banner of the PN Farm Arts Initiative\, with Roxanne Bash and Christopher Luna paving the way for all the good that came after. Plus\, it\’s Abby\’s birthday month! So plenty to celebrate here\, with our second attempt at an Open House!) \nHere\’s a tentative schedule. The blocks may move around\, and there may be additional offerings\, but here\’s what it\’s looking like at the moment! \n10 am: Book Arts with Jody & Alan Adams \n11 am: Poetry Workshop with Christopher Luna \n12 pm: Dried Flower Cards with Barbara AW Wright \n1 pm: Weaving with Elliot Gajan \n3 pm: Origami with Phuong Tran\, Megan Dudley\, and Bonnie Donovan

SUMMARY:Writing Your Tree Story\, with Kate Gray
DESCRIPTION:Come talk with the trees of Plas Newydd Farm\, and bring your tree stories with you for a one-day generative workshop with Oregon-based poet Kate Gray. \nMaybe you climbed trees as a kid. Maybe you picnicked under trees in parks. Maybe you made your living planting seedlings\, tending them\, and then shipping your crop to the sawmill. Maybe you\’re a woodworker wanting to dig deep into the stories your lumber carries. Whether you are a tree-lover or just a human who lives in a wooden house\, touches paper\, or\, for that matter\, breathes\, trees are a part of your story.  \nWhat tree(s) shaped you? In this generative workshop\, you’ll write the story of a tree in your life\, whether it shielded you\, grew you\, or gob-smacked you with its beauty. No tree springing to mind? We\’ll make sure you have the chance to meet some of the trees of Plas Newydd Farm to spur your writing.  \nNo experience necessary. Poetry/prose/song encouraged. You’ll experience a guided meditation\, writing to prompts\, a walk in the forested landscape of Plas Newydd (weather-permitting)\, laughter\, and the Gateless Method of specific\, positive feedback. \n \nKate Gray\’s passion stems from writing\, teaching\, and volunteering. For Every Girl: New & Selected Poems was published by Widow & Orphan House in 2019. Her first full-length book of poems\, Another Sunset We Survive (Cedar House Books\, 2007) was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award and followed chapbooks\, Bone-Knowing (2006)\, winner of the Gertrude Press Poetry Prize and Where She Goes (2000)\, winner of the Blue Light Chapbook Prize. Kate’s first novel\, Carry the Sky\, (Forest Avenue\, 2014) stares at bullying without blinking. In her novel-in-progress\, she narrates\, in Sylvia Plath’s voice\, what led to The Bell Jar and her suicide attempt in 1953. After 25 years teaching English at a community college\, she retired to coach writers. Kate and her partner live in a pine-and-oak forest in the mid-Columbia River Gorge with two impetuous dogs.

SUMMARY:Craft your own pen! – Wood Turning Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, February 3rd for a wood-turning workshop and craft your own ball point pen from wood grown right here on the farm! \nGuided by sculptor Lila Ferber\, participants will  leave this class with a functioning ballpoint twist pen and simple instructions on how to change the ink. \nNever turned on the lathe before\, or interested in learning a new wood-turning skill?  This class is for you!  We\’ll learn about fingernail gouges and carbide tools\, and how to go from raw wood to a finished product\, going through the steps of cutting\, drilling\, gluing and turning our chosen wood\, using lathes from Lila\’s mobile wood-turning studio. Each participant will make their own unique pen shape\, then sand and finish it with walnut oil and beeswax.  At the end\, you will choose from gold\, silver\, and copper hardware\, to finish your custom-made writing implement\, ready for your own words\, or a perfect gift!  \nHow cool is that??  \nNo experience or equipment needed. Bring lunch\, closed-toed shoes and clothes that can get dirty\, and a readiness to learn a new skill!  \nClass size is limited to just 4 participants\, so don\’t wait to sign up!  \nLila Ferber is a sculptor with 9 years of experience in the field\, including turning on the lathe and carving wood\, ice\, stone\, sand\, and foam.  She received her BFA in sculpture from the Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri\, and has spent years working at sculpture parks and museums around the US.  Studying under legendary KC woodturner Jon Wilson has inspired her to continue honing her craft and to share it with any and all eager students.  She encourages her class to channel their inner child by being creative and experimenting\, all while gaining new skills\, and friendships along the way.  Follow up questions are always welcome and free of charge as students continue turning on their own at home.

SUMMARY:Canopy Time
DESCRIPTION:If you pay attention\, you can tell time by the forest canopy—twigs and seeds\, branches and leaves marking seasons with color\, fullness\, sway.  — Abby Braithwaite\, A Portrait of the Artist as a Crone TreeCanopy Time walks are mostly monthly walks/rolls/rides on Plas Newydd Farm. \n$10 per person. If cost is a barrier\, get in touch at arts@pnfarm.com and you will be welcome! \n[metaslider id=4496]

SUMMARY:Ecopoetics with Daniela Naomi Molnar
DESCRIPTION:***Canceled*** \nEcopoetics with Daniela Naomi Molnar \nWhat does it mean to write WITH a place\, to consider a place as a wise collaborator rather than a backdrop? Through guided prompts and examples\, this class will explore how place can be a medium that twines with the medium of language within the vessel of a poem. You will learn how to braid your own voice with the voices of the earth in the inspiring company of others. You’ll also get an introduction to the vast world of contemporary and historical ecopoetics\, a field that is fascinated by how places are made by poems and how poems make places. If weather allows\, we will be outside for part of the day. No previous experience is required though a familiarity with writing and/or reading poetry will be helpful.  \nPlease bring writing materials and a bag lunch\, and come ready to spend some time outdoors.  Coffee\, tea and snacks will be provided throughout the day. \nPlease let us know at arts@pnfarm.com if you have have accommodation needs\, or if cost is a barrier.  \nDaniela Naomi Molnar is an artist\, poet\, and writer collaborating with the mediums of language\, image\, paint\, pigment\, and place. She is also a wilderness guide\, educator\, and eternal student. Her book CHORUS was selected by Kazim Ali as the winner of Omnidawn Press’ 1st/2nd Book Award. Her work is the subject of a front-page feature in the Los Angeles Times\, an Oregon Art Beat profile\, an entry in the Oregon Encyclopedia\, a feature in Poetry Daily\, and has been recognized by numerous grants\, fellowships\, and residencies. Her next book\, Light / Remains\, is a hybrid of poetry\, essay\, and art\, out in 2025 from Bored Wolves Press. She founded the Art + Ecology program at the Pacific Northwest College of Art and helped found the backcountry artist residency Signal Fire. She can be found in Portland\, Oregon or exploring global wildlands. www.danielamolnar.com / Instagram: @daniela_naomi_molnar
